How can we battle unbelief? Trusting Jesus unleashes His power.

It’s really amazing that our faith can place any limits on Jesus. The Lord of the whole Universe has left us room, the freedom to accept Him, or to turn away from Him. Jesus can always do whatever he wants. So, it’s mysterious that the people of Jesus’s home town could actually reject Him even though they had heard of His wisdom and deeds of power. In fact they took offense at Him.

It’s easy to understand that people who don’t know Jesus might not trust Him. How can they? They are relying on only vague ideas that they have picked up. It can be a long journey, with many ups and downs, before someone can finally begin to trust Jesus enough to place their trust in Him.

But what about Christians who have already accepted Him? Maybe we can be like Jesus’s neighbours and relatives, because we figure that we already know Him well enough. We may not be willing to be surprised at what He may be doing and saying in our midst. He is the Prophet sent by God. How can we accept Jesus and His power in our lives and our communities?

First, Christians need to recognize that we can be complacent. We may be setting limits on Jesus, because we think that we already know all about Him. We can try to set aside our preconceptions and accept that Jesus is the one who says, “Behold, I make all things new!” (Revelation 21:8)

Second, Christians need to be open-minded and open-hearted about the amazing things God can and will do with us. He is the Almighty One who can change anything. He can turn darkness into light, death into life, and, despair into hope. God turns the whole world upside down; He “has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly.” (Luke 1:52)

Third, we can find hope in any circumstance. Augustine said, “God created us without our consent, but He will not save us without our cooperation.” No matter who you are you can welcome Jesus into your life and into your heart. He promises that He will come and live within you, and change everything. To trust Him is our path to heaven. When we trust, we triumph.
